Georgia DOT Prepares Roads for Winter Weather With Massive Brine Treatment

Macon, GA (WGXA) – As snow and freezing temperatures create hazardous conditions on Georgia’s roadways, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has been working around the clock to prevent ice accumulation and ensure safer travel for residents. Days of preparation, including extensive brining efforts, highlight the state’s commitment to minimizing the impact of winter weather on transportation.

GDOT’s Efforts to Keep Roads Safe

Gina Snider, Communication Officer for GDOT District 3, explained the proactive measures the department has taken to prepare for the winter storm. Crews treated over 43,000 lane miles of highways, interstates, bridges, and overpasses with more than 1.7 million gallons of brine—a mixture of salt and water designed to prevent ice from bonding to road surfaces.

“Since Sunday, we’ve been out brining the roads,” Snider said in a Zoom interview with WGXA on Tuesday. “Once we see this accumulation, we’re going to salt the roads next.”

The combination of brine and salt helps maintain traction on roads and reduces the likelihood of accidents caused by icy conditions.

Local Motorists Brave the Weather

While GDOT urges residents to stay off the roads during hazardous conditions, some drivers, like Daymond Jackson and Reanna Little, ventured out despite the snowfall. The two were working as food delivery drivers on Tuesday and shared their experiences navigating snow-covered roads.

“[The roads have] been a little slippery, but not much. We’ve been out Door-Dashing so far,” said Little, who recently moved to Middle Georgia.

The couple expressed surprise at the amount of snow that accumulated in the area.

“It’s crazy, it’s crazy out here, but we’re gonna make the most of it,” Jackson said.

GDOT’s Warning to Drivers

Despite the efforts to keep roads clear, GDOT strongly advises residents to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. If travel cannot be avoided, drivers should take precautions to ensure their safety. GDOT recommends carrying essential supplies, including:

  • Blankets
  • Food
  • Water
  • Flashlights

These items can be lifesaving if you experience car trouble or become stranded while waiting for assistance.

A Rare Snowfall in Middle Georgia

For many residents, including Jackson and Little, the snowfall was an unusual and memorable event. The accumulation transformed the familiar scenery of Macon into a winter wonderland, prompting excitement and curiosity from locals.

“This snowstorm is a whole new experience,” said one local resident, marveling at the rare weather phenomenon in Middle Georgia.

Governor Declares State of Emergency

In response to the winter storm, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency to ensure that resources are available to address potential issues caused by the weather. The declaration allows state agencies to deploy additional personnel and equipment as needed to assist with recovery efforts.

GDOT’s Role in Winter Weather Response

The Georgia Department of Transportation plays a critical role in maintaining road safety during winter weather events. By using brine to pre-treat roads and following up with salt application, GDOT minimizes the risk of ice formation and ensures that emergency vehicles can respond to incidents quickly.

In addition to their on-the-ground efforts, GDOT provides regular updates through social media and other channels, keeping residents informed about road conditions and closures.

Tips for Staying Safe During Winter Weather

As snow and freezing temperatures continue to affect the region, residents are encouraged to take precautions to stay safe:

  1. Avoid Non-Essential Travel: Stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
  2. Prepare Your Vehicle: Check your tires, battery, and windshield wipers before heading out.
  3. Drive Slowly and Cautiously: Reduce your speed and allow extra space between vehicles.
  4. Stay Informed: Monitor local news and GDOT updates for the latest information on road conditions.
  5. Be Prepared: Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight.

Looking Ahead

As winter weather continues to pose challenges, the dedication of GDOT crews and other first responders is crucial in ensuring the safety of Georgia residents. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, communities can weather the storm and look forward to safer days ahead.
