INDIANAPOLIS—On May 14, IMPD said they had arrested a man who they say fled the scene of a crash last week that killed a 4-year-old kid and seriously hurt two adults.
Police say the 22-year-old suspect is being charged with reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident that killed someone, leaving the scene of an accident with catastrophic injuries, and leaving the scene of an accident with major bodily injury.
The accident took place on May 7 at 9:15 p.m. near where East Raymond Street and South State Avenue meet. A spokesman for the Indiana State Police Department said that a fast-moving Dodge Charger ran a red light at State Avenue and hit another car that had a green light as well as a cyclist who had the walk light.
“It wasn’t even close,” IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer said after the accident, pointing out that the Charger driver had a “solid red” light on.
Court papers say that the Dodge Charger’s data showed the driver was going 80 mph for a half-second before the crash, even though the speed limit was 40 mph and the light was red.
The child was riding in a bike trailer behind his father, who was riding his bike.
Young Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, who was 4 years old, died at Riley Hospital for Children around 10 p.m. The father was taken to the hospital in very bad shape. It was also taken to a hospital that the driver of the car that the Charger hit was in critical condition.
Marcela Garcia, the boy’s mom, talked to 13News about her son. These are her quotes in English.
“This feels like a bad dream,” she said.
“I had no idea this would happen to me.” It’s been hard for me to believe that someone hit him while he was riding his bike.
It’s what she wants.
IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said that the arrest was made possible by help from the neighborhood.
“The great successes have come from the community coming forward, this effort with the community, this surveillance footage, the individuals that witnessed, that came forward, that’s critical in an instance like this, and we need to continue to see that in our community,” said he.
Garcia, though, said she wants the man to understand what he did.
“I want him to think about how I feel, that he take me away from my baby,” she stated.
We miss her son every day.
“He’s a god.” It’s not necessary for him. “He was pure; he didn’t know anything bad about the world,” Garcia said.
Police cops who were training in the area saw the crash and told the police about it. They said the Charger’s driver ran away from the scene.
An IMPD social media post on May 14 said, “After speaking to several witnesses, viewing available video footage, and examining evidence at the scene,” investigators were able to identify the suspect who had fled.
Court papers say that officers found a receipt for an auto parts store in the Dodge Charger that had been left behind. The exchange took place about five minutes before the crash.
When detectives went to the auto parts store, they watched surveillance video that showed the driver of the Dodge Charger getting parts for their car. The video matched the receipt that was found in the Dodge Charger.
Detectives from the IMPD’s Violent Crimes Unit found the suspect and took him to the Southwest District, where he was arrested.
Police Chief Chris Bailey said in a statement, “I am heartbroken by the loss of Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and everyone who loved him.” “An arrest can’t bring back a life that was so tragically cut short, and I know this isn’t the end of the story.” But I hope this step brings some comfort, knowing that the person who did this can’t walk around easily anymore.
In this case, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide whether to press charges.
