38-year-old Man Dies After Crashing Motorcycle While Evading Police in South Carolina

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. – The coroner’s office has disclosed the name of a motorcyclist killed in a crash after reportedly fleeing police on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Meadowfield Road. Officials stated a 2008 Suzuki motorcycle was attempting to elude Gaston Police officers when it collided with the back of a northbound 2014 Chevrolet vehicle that had slowed due to traffic.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased rider as Travis Leon Horton of Pelion, 38 years old. The coroner’s office stated that he was not wearing a helmet.

According to a representative for the Gaston Police Department, the initial traffic stop was for a tag that did not match the car and had been altered. Police claimed they used their lights and sirens to halt the motorcycle but lost sight of it in the 500 block of Meadowfield Road. Officials claimed they discovered it had been involved in a crash in the 800 block of the road, where officers attempted to save the rider until emergency medical services arrived. The car’s driver was not wounded.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the collision.
