According to authorities, a 6-year-old boy was murdered when he crashed an all-terrain vehicle into a tree Saturday evening in Joliet.
Just after 5 p.m., Joliet police officers responded to an ATV accident in the 900 block of Mission Boulevard.
According to preliminary investigations, the boy was driving a REX110 ATV with an 8-year-old passenger southbound on Mission Boulevard’s sidewalk between the 900 and 1000 blocks.

Police said the 6-year-old was ejected from the ATV when it lost control and collided with a tree.
Firefighters transported him to St Joseph Medical Center, where he eventually died. The 8-year-old was unharmed in the crash.
“There are no words to completely express the pain of losing a child. Our hearts ache for the family, whose unspeakable loss is felt by our officers and the whole Joliet community. In times like this, we must band together to provide our prayers, strength, and steadfast support to those in need,” Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans said.
The crash remains under investigation.
