Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash near Leonardtown that killed a 66-year-old man, and the findings will be evaluated by the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Around 4:22 p.m., troopers from the Leonardtown Barrack responded to the intersection of Maryland Route 5 (Point Lookout Road) and Maryland Route 4 (St. Andrews Church Road) after receiving reports of a pedestrian crash.

The victim has been identified as James Michael Lacey. According to preliminary findings, Lacey had parked his Chevrolet Colorado on the northbound shoulder of MD Route 5 with the emergency flashers turned on for unknown reasons.

He was outside his vehicle when a Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 33-year-old guy went off the road and collided with Lacey and his truck.

When first responders came, Lacey was unresponsive, and despite CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at the site. EMS took the Silverado driver to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital to treat his injuries.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is in charge of the investigation. Once their findings are complete, they will be forwarded to the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether or not to press charges.

MD Route 5 was stopped for more than two hours as authorities cleared the site and investigated the collision. The investigation is underway.
