It’s going to
be a hot one
, folks.
Portland’s high temperatures on Sunday and Monday are expected to reach 95 degrees, triggering a National Weather Service
heat advisory
from 10 a.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. on Monday.
The first string of very hot summer days can pose a particular risk since our bodies have not yet adjusted to the summer weather,
Multnomah County warns
. The county has not activated cooling centers for the public, but it
does have a map
of libraries, splash pads and community centers where locals can beat the heat.
The National Weather Service suggests that Portlanders stay hydrated, keep out of the sunshine and limit strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.
If you’re planning to take a dip, remember that waterways are still cold as snow runoff fills the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Swimmers should keep an eye out for hypothermia and avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase hypothermia risk. Snow runoff can also create fast currents, the National Weather Service warns. It recommends that swimmers wear life jackets, keep an eye on children and
swim with a buddy
for safety.
Temperatures should cool off later in the week. Tuesday’s high is in the upper 80s and by Thursday the high temperature is expected to drop to 75 degrees.
