Oregon State
is headed to the College World Series after
beating Florida State 14-10 Sunday night
to win the Corvallis Super Regional.
OSU makes its eighth trip to the CWS in Omaha, a place where the Beavers have feasted. Oregon State won
national titles in 2006, 2007 and 2018
, and threatened a couple other times.
Oregon State (47-14-1) plays Louisville (40-22) in its CWS opener. The tournament begins Friday. A complete schedule will be announced when Monday’s super regionals conclude.
Here is Oregon State’s history in the College World Series:
The Ralph Coleman-coached Beavers made their first CWS trip 73 years ago after winning the Pacific Coast Conference and Western Regional. It was the first of two CWS two-and-outs for the Beavers, as they lost to Duke and Texas by a collective score of 28-8.
The
first of six Pat Casey teams
to end their season at the College World Series. The Beavers, who won a then-program best 46 games, didn’t stick around long in Omaha, losing to Tulane and Baylor, which needed 10 innings to eliminate the Beavers.
Oregon State had to wonder if it was ever going to win at the CWS after dropping the opener 11-1. Then came an amazing run, as the Beavers ran off four consecutive wins in elimination games to advance to the championship series. North Carolina beat OSU in the series opener, but these Beavers proved difficult to eliminate. The Beavers bounced back to beat the Tar Heels 11-7 and 3-2 win their first national championship.
The last at-large team to earn its way into the tournament field, Oregon State won a regional at Virginia, and super regional in Corvallis to advance to Omaha. The Beavers were a tour de force in this CWS, winning five consecutive games, four by margins of at least six runs. Oregon State swept North Carolina in the championship series, wrapping up back-to-back national titles with a 9-3 win over the Tar Heels.
OSU ended a six-year CWS drought after winning a difficult super regional against Kansas State. The Beavers went 2-2 during their Omaha run, losing two games to Mississippi State, while beating Louisville and Indiana.
A program-high 56 wins wasn’t enough to emerge with a third national championship. After sweeping their way through regionals and super regionals, the Beavers opened the College World Series with a 6-5 win over Cal State Fullerton and 13-1 victory over LSU. Ultimately, the Tigers proved to be too much for Oregon State. LSU eliminated the Beavers with strong pitching, holding OSU to a combined five hits in 3-1 and 6-1 losses.
Another dominant team, but this time, the Beavers finished the job. Oregon State romped through the regionals and super regionals, but found itself playing defense after dropping its CWS opener to North Carolina. Oregon State bounced back to win four consecutive elimination games, beating Mississippi State 5-2 to earn a championship series berth. In a series that will forever be remembered by Beaver fans, OSU took advantage of an Arkansas fielding gaffe in Game 2 to even the series. The following day, Kevin Abel threw a two-hit gem in a 5-0 win over the Razorbacks as Oregon State captured its third national title.
