A 3-year-old child died Saturday after walking out of a hotel in The Dalles and ending up in the Columbia River, police said.
Emergency responders were called around 9:11 a.m. to the Columbia River Hotel and Conference Center, where the child had been staying with family from Washington, The Dalles Police Department said in a statement Monday.
The child was located in the Columbia River near the Oregon shoreline and was transported to a local hospital, police said. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.
“The Dalles Police wants to express our profound sorrow to the family and all of those impacted by this tragedy,” the department said in its statement.
