Washington company recalls frozen shrimp due to listeria contamination

A Washington-based seafood wholesaler with facilities in Oregon is recalling nearly 45,000 pounds of frozen shrimp that may be contaminated with listeria.

The recall includes 1- and 5-pound bags of Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat, according to a

Tuesday notice

posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Bags were sold by Bellingham-based Bornstein Seafoods, whose primary processing plant is in Astoria.

The product was distributed to retailers in Oregon, Washington, California and British Columbia. It may have also been distributed nationwide.

Recalled shrimp was sold in plastic bags with lot codes printed on the bottom of the back of each bag. Bags are labeled with the universal product code “614133200246.”

The recall notice says listeria monocytogenes was detected during routine sampling. No illnesses have been reported by the company.

Listeria infection, known as listeriosis, can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, as well as diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It can cause miscarriages or premature delivery during pregnancy and can be fatal for people with weakened immune systems. It is treated with antibiotics.
