The fools in Los Angeles who vented their fury at President Donald Trump this week by throwing rocks, looting stores and assaulting cops may as well have been wearing red MAGA hats.

They gave Trump a weapon in his war on our democracy, a chance to present himself as the guardian of law and order, even as he pardons common criminals for a price. They let him turn America’s attention back to his favorite topic, the failure of Democrats to secure the border under President Biden, an epic mistake that made Trump’s 2024 win possible. They distracted our attention from his monstrous plan to finance huge tax cuts for the rich by cutting health care and food aid to everyone else.
