Crater senior named The Oregonian/OregonLive boys track and field athlete of the year

Considering the distance events, the 2025 high school track and field season may end up being one of Oregon’s greatest.

Josiah Tostenson of Crater was in the forefront of the distance running revolution, breaking records in numerous major events.

In recent months, Tostenson, who will attend the University of Washington in the autumn, broke new state records in the mile (3:59), the 1,600 (3:57.39), the 4xmile relay (16:54.8), and the 1,500-meter race (3 minutes, 36.85 seconds).

He may have solidified his place among Oregon’s greatest distance runners by being the second high school student to complete a mile in less than four minutes.

Furthermore, Tostenson’s legacy in Oregon distance running would not be possible without his running partner Tayvon Kitchen.

Over the past year, Tostenson and Kitchen have set nearly every state record and won nearly every distance race that was held. In addition to winning cross-country team and state titles, they have outperformed the nation’s best competitors.

When discussing his legacy with Kitchen earlier in the spring, Tostenson told The Oregonian/OregonLive, “I just want to leave knowing that we were two of the grittiest guys in cross country and track.” that we are men that competed in professional races and took the lead right away. participated in races and kicked for victory. Just men who were prepared to go above and beyond to win a race, create a record, and entertain the crowd.

Tostenson moved from the 3,000 to the 800 for his second race this year and won the 1,500 again as the Class 5A state champion. He is a five-time state track winner who departs Oregon’s high school landscape.

The Oregonian’s sports staff selects the Oregonian/OregonLive player of the year awards based on season performance, state finishes, and top victories.
