Early on Saturday morning, a rear-end collision on Interstate 5 close to Ridgefield claimed the life of a 19-year-old Portlander and injured four others.
An incident report states that Sadie L. Bobo, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was declared deceased at the site.
According to authorities, she was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Skylar M. Wainis, 23, of Longview, Washington, who is currently being charged with vehicular assault and vehicular homicide in connection with the collision.
Around 4:52 a.m., Wainis’ car rear-ended another car in the first lane while he was traveling south on I-5, according to officials. Following the first collision, the Wainis car went through the second and third lanes, collided with a cable barrier, and finally landed on the left shoulder.
After being struck, the second car, driven by Beaverton resident Young H. Chun, 76, fled the road, passed through a fence owned by the Washington Department of Transportation, and stopped in front of Delfel Road.
Another passenger in the Wainis vehicle who was not wearing a seatbelt, Octovio L. Aguilar, 19, of Portland, was hurt and taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center.
Despite wearing seatbelts, Chun and his companion, Beaverton resident Bikja Sung, 69, had injuries that necessitated transportation to PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center.
Wainis was sent to the same hospital after suffering injuries in the collision as well. According to the report, it’s unclear if he was buckled up when the crash occurred.
