Trail Blazers alter trade sending Anfernee Simons to Boston for Jrue Holiday

According to a league source who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive, the Portland Trail Blazers’ trade with the Boston Celtics has been whittled down to a pure player swap without the Celtics receiving the two second-round picks that were previously reported.

The source claims that a recent examination of Holiday’s medical records found nothing significant enough to support the negation of the trade. There was enough there, though, for the Blazers to modestly change the terms of the contract.

According to the source, Holiday is in good health and will be exercising this summer before training camp begins at the end of September.

Simons was sent to the Celtics for Holiday along with two second-round selections in the trade, which was initially announced on June 23.

However, all negotiated agreements had to be formally concluded by July 6 before the trade could be made public.

The 26-year-old Simons has one year left on his deal, which will earn him $27.7 million the next season.

Holiday, 35, has a player option for roughly $104.4 million left on his contract, along with two guaranteed years. Next season, he will earn $32.4 million.

Holiday, a two-time All-Star and NBA champion, helped the Blazers gain more experience, but he also grew older and made a much bigger financial commitment.

But if Holiday, who missed 20 games due to a variety of illnesses last season, stays healthy, the Blazers might sell him to a team that needs a veteran guard before the trade deadline.
