Flights suspended after person is sucked into plane’s engine at European airport

Rome Due to a runway incident that local media reported involving a person fleeing onto the tarmac, getting sucked into an airport engine, and dying, the airport in the northern Italian city of Bergamo temporarily grounded flights on Tuesday.

Due to an issue on the taxiway, all planes were halted at the Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport from 10:20 a.m. until noon local time, according to the Bergamo Milan airport authorities. There was an investigation going on.

Firefighters were seen near a body bag on the tarmac next to the airplane in video footage that was broadcast on Corriere della Sera’s websites.

According to the publication, which cited anonymous airport officials, someone died after running onto the tarmac when a plane was taking off and getting sucked into the engine. The Volotea airline’s Airbus A319 was en route from Orio to Asturias, Spain.

Suicide was suspected, according to the LaPresse news agency, which cited anonymous detectives.

The border police, fire department, and first aid center at the airport declined to comment on the incident.
