Sunset baseball star selected by National League West power in 2025 MLB draft

One of Oregon’s top baseball prospects could soon be headed to California.

On Sunday afternoon, Sunset pitcher Kruz Schoolcraft was selected by the San Diego Padres with the No. 25 overall selection in the 2025 MLB draft.

Schoolcraft is currently committed to Tennessee and was listed at the No. 19 prospect by the MLB ahead of the draft. The 6-foot-8 left-handed pitcher can rip a fastball up to 97 miles-per-hour and has a slider that flies in the low 80s.

His MLB profile lists him as a legitimate two-way player.

Over the past two seasons, he has helped guide Sunset into one of Oregon’s top baseball schools. The Apollos went 28-3 in the 2024 season and lost in the Class 6A state championship game. In 2025, Sunset went 22-9 and beat Grant 6-5 for the state title.

In the 2025 spring season, Schoolcraft compiled a 7-0 record with one save, and five shutouts. He earned a .389 earned run average with 96 strikeouts and 22 hits allowed in 54 innings pitched.

A two-way standout, Schoolcraft had a .482 batting average with a .637 on-base percentage. He had 41 hits, 30 runs batted in and 10 home runs. Playing first base when he’s not pitching, he had a .978 fielding percentage.

Schoolcraft is the latest in a string of recent Oregon high schoolers who have heard their name called early in the MLB draft. Jesuit’s Noble Meyer was selected 10th overall by the Miami Marlins in 2023. Mick Abel, another Jesuit alumnus, was taken 15th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020.
