Implementing hefty speeding fines that are proportionate to the amount of speed you were exceeding is one of the most common strategies states have used to deter people from speeding.
States are in charge of deciding how severe the penalties would be; some have laws that could result in fines of thousands of dollars, while others only impose fines of $100. Furthermore, several states penalise excessive speeders with jail time in addition to hefty penalties.
New speeding cameras are deployed by this state.
To help law enforcement apprehend vehicles exceeding the speed limit, more states throughout the country are implementing automated camera technology. This trend has been led by New York in particular, which already has the biggest and most extensive automated camera programme in the country.
On its official website, the City of Oakland in California has detailed their plans to install up to eighteen speed safety camera systems, which were made possible by Assembly Bill (AB) 645.
The cameras are anticipated to be installed later this year during the fall and winter months after the law was approved in 2023.
The Oakland Department of Transportation will be in charge of the programme. The first penalty for exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph is $50. In order to select 18 spots to install the cameras that display the most incidents, data on traffic accidents was gathered from 40 locations throughout the city.
Nationwide, more speed-reduction measures have been implemented
Other states are toughening their speeding fines to deter drivers from breaching the law and putting other people’s lives in danger, and Oakland is joining cities like New York City and others in implementing speeding cameras.
As part of their “Vision Zero” campaign to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries, the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has started installing speed cameras.
The new automated technology was deployed at the following locations as part of the camera pilot programme earlier this month: Nicollet Ave near 46th St. W in King Field/Tangletown; Fremont Ave N near W. Broadway Ave in Near North; 18th Ave NE near Central Ave NE in North-east; Chicago Ave near Franklin Ave E in Ventura Village; and 3rd St. N near 1st Ave N in Downtown. The initiative intends to spread to further city locations if it is effective.
