Oregon ‘looking for impact players’ to replace 9 starters on defense

Eugene Oregon’s defense needs to act quickly because it lost 11 of its top 15 tacklers from the previous campaign.

It will be difficult for the Ducks and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi to replace the entire starting defensive line and secondary, even with top tackler Bryce Boettcher and Big Ten sacks leader Matayo Uiagalelei returning.

Lupoi was not pleased with the defense’s performance at the first practice of fall camp, and he specifically criticized the defensive line, which lost Derrick Harmon, Jamaree Caldwell, and Jordan Burch to the NFL. He was considerably more pleased with Thursday’s outcome.

Lupoi stated, “We are searching for impact players. This is your chance if you have been chomping at the bit to get those reps.” On Wednesday, I addressed the entire defense by saying that, honestly, I didn’t think our effort was up to par.

Before I comment, I always want to evaluate the movie. Going in before the movie today felt really different. They appeared hungry and seemed to have a genuine reaction. I think those guys led it, and we had a wonderful unit meeting where the guys attacked the ball to the standard.

Lupoi agreed that the pace of fall camp differs from the off-season months of player-led sessions and those with little coaching throughout the summer, while Dan Lanning recognized that the first practice of fall camp helps players to knock off the rust since spring practice three months earlier.

Lupoi used a quotation from Notorious B.I.G. to emphasize the importance of treating each day as if it were his first, demonstrating how serious he is about establishing urgency and maintaining the program’s standards.

Citing the late rapper, Lupoi stated, “I’m going to treat every single day like I’m an intern.” That is what I aim to achieve, and I want it to spread among the players and staff alike.

On their way to the Big Ten Championship past season, Oregon’s defense was perhaps at its finest since at least 2019.

Lanning and Lupoi will be depending on a number of players who had a small part in last season’s victories for much larger roles as they begin their fourth season at UO, where the roster is primarily made up of players who signed straight out of high school. Getting their youngest and least experienced defense to grow as much as possible will be the focus of the upcoming month.

The deadly pill of success that we achieved last season, defeating the national champions, Michigan, Penn State, and all the other nice stuff, as well as winning the Big Ten championship, will not be the focus, Lupoi stated.
