Pennsylvania Lawmakers Mourn the Loss of Representative Matt Gergely
Pennsylvania legislators are grieving the passing of Representative Matt Gergely (D), who died at the age of 45.
House Democrats announced Gergely’s death on Sunday, highlighting his lifelong dedication to “fighting for children and working families.” A cause of death has not been disclosed, though it was previously reported that Gergely experienced a medical issue over the holiday season.
Gergely was first elected in 2023 and re-elected in 2024 to represent the 35th District in Allegheny County. Before his time in the state legislature, he spent two decades serving in various community roles in his hometown of McKeesport.
Deadlock in Pennsylvania House Following Gergely’s Passing
Gergely’s death leaves the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a 101-101 partisan tie. Democrats had secured a narrow one-seat majority in November’s election, maintaining the same slim margin they held in the previous legislative session.
Until a special election is held to fill the seat in the heavily Democratic district near Pittsburgh, the chamber will remain evenly divided, potentially stalling legislative action.
In their statement, House Democrats announced that Speaker Joanna McClinton (D-Philadelphia) will schedule the special election at a later date.
“Matt will be desperately missed in Harrisburg, and we know his passing is a tremendous loss to his communities in Western Pennsylvania,” the statement read. “Please join us in keeping his wife and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time.”
The loss of Representative Gergely marks a significant moment for Pennsylvania politics, as the state legislature navigates this unexpected deadlock.
