Safety Concern Forces Kia to Recall Niro EVs and Hybrids Over Airbag Issue

Safety Concern Forces Kia to Recall Niro EVs and Hybrids Over Airbag Issue

Kia Recalls Over 80,000 Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Due to Airbag Risk

Kia is recalling more than 80,000 electric and hybrid vehicles, citing concerns over potential airbag malfunctions, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed last week.

The recall affects 2023-2025 models of the Kia Niro EV, Niro Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Niro Hybrid. According to the NHTSA’s announcement on January 17, the issue centers around the floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat, which may become damaged. This damage could prevent the front airbags and seatbelts from deploying as intended or lead to an unintended deployment of side curtain airbags.

The NHTSA warned that such malfunctions could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash, underscoring the importance of addressing the issue.

What Owners Need to Know

Kia is urging owners of affected vehicles to bring their cars to a Kia dealership for a free inspection and necessary repairs. Dealers will also install wiring covers to mitigate the risk of further issues. The company plans to send owner notification letters starting March 14, 2025.

Impacted vehicle owners can contact Kia’s customer service line at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC332 for further assistance.

A History of Recent Recalls

This recall follows another significant Kia recall last spring. At that time, more than 427,000 vehicles, including certain Telluride models from 2020-2023 and some 2024 models, were recalled due to a potential issue with the vehicles being able to move while in park. The issue was linked to improperly assembled intermediate shafts and right front driveshafts.

Kia continues to work with the NHTSA to ensure the safety of its vehicles and address any potential risks to owners.
