The Governor of New Jersey has appeared to admit that he has an undocumented immigrant living in his New Jersey home.
Phil Murphy spoke at Montclair State University on Saturday and revealed someone “whose immigration status is not yet at the point there are trying to get it to” is living above his garage at his home.
Murphy dropped the news amid the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown on illegal immigrants in the United States . Since Donald Trump officially took office on January 20th, ICE reported that his its agency has arrested more than 7,4000 people.
“I don’t want to get into too much detail, but there’s someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to,” Murphy explained.
“And we said, you know what, let’s have her live at our house above our garage. And good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.”
The clip, revealed on Fox, has eight million views on X, more than 3,500 comments and more than 14,000 likes.
New Jersey State Representative Erik Peterson called out Governor Murphy, according to InsiderNJ.
“The governor thinks he’s above the law,” Peterson said. “Instead of enforcing our duly enacted laws, he’s breaking them and telling others to do the same. It’s outrageous.”
“If Murphy wants to be a social justice warrior so badly, he should resign instead of making a mockery of his oath of office to uphold the law,” he concluded.
In a recent statement that has garnered significant attention, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy revealed that he has an undocumented migrant living above his garage, sending a defiant message to federal authorities. The governor’s remarks, made during a public appearance, underscore his stance on immigration and his opposition to the federal government’s hardline policies on undocumented individuals.
The bold move is seen as a clear challenge to the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement, which has been marked by heightened deportations, stricter border control measures, and an increased focus on detaining undocumented migrants. Governor Murphy, a strong proponent of sanctuary policies and immigrant rights, has long advocated for fair treatment of undocumented individuals, making his latest comments a reflection of his ongoing political and ethical stance.
The Revelation: A Personal Stand on Immigration
During a public event, Governor Murphy made a surprising and candid admission when he discussed his personal experience with an undocumented migrant living in his home. The migrant, who lives in a space above the governor’s garage, is reportedly someone Murphy and his family have come to know well over the years.

Murphy’s comments were not only a personal reflection but also a direct challenge to federal immigration enforcement efforts. He expressed frustration over the federal government’s aggressive crackdown on undocumented migrants and showed support for those who contribute to communities, regardless of their immigration status.
“Good luck to the feds!” Murphy quipped, signaling his refusal to comply with federal enforcement measures aimed at deporting migrants, including those with longstanding ties to the community. His message was clear: he would not be part of the efforts to remove individuals like the migrant living above his garage.
Governor Murphy’s Immigration Stance
Governor Murphy has long been an advocate for immigrant rights and has positioned New Jersey as a sanctuary state, which limits local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities. New Jersey’s sanctuary status is intended to protect immigrants from being detained or deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) based on their immigration status alone.
Murphy’s actions align with his public opposition to federal immigration policies, which have sparked significant debate across the country. While some view his stance as compassionate, offering refuge to those fleeing hardship, others argue that it undermines the rule of law and encourages further illegal immigration.
In his tenure as governor, Murphy has worked to expand access to healthcare, education, and legal protections for undocumented immigrants. His decision to speak openly about the migrant living in his home serves as a reflection of his commitment to defending immigrant communities in New Jersey.
Impact on New Jersey’s Immigrant Community
The Untold Story of How Immigration Supports Social Security Stability
Governor Murphy’s decision to share his personal experience is part of a broader effort to normalize the presence of immigrants in the state and challenge the stigmas that often accompany undocumented status. It also underscores the human side of immigration debates, particularly when it comes to individuals who have established lives and relationships within their communities.
The governor’s bold statement is likely to resonate with New Jersey’s large immigrant population, many of whom face daily fears of deportation and family separation due to the federal crackdown on undocumented migrants. Undocumented immigrants often work in key sectors of the state’s economy, including agriculture, construction, and service industries, contributing significantly to the state’s economic health.
By standing by the undocumented migrant in his own home, Murphy is amplifying the voices of those who are too often marginalized or criminalized by national policies. His actions reflect a deep commitment to immigrant rights and humanizing the immigration debate, which often focuses on legal status rather than the contributions and struggles of individuals.
Federal Pushback and Legal Implications
Despite the support from within his state, Governor Murphy’s remarks have not gone unnoticed by federal officials. The Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE officials have made it clear that they continue to prioritize immigration enforcement in states that have adopted sanctuary policies. Federal agents have carried out a number of immigration raids in sanctuary cities and states, seeking to arrest and deport undocumented individuals, particularly those with criminal records.
Murphy’s comments could put him at odds with the federal government, potentially subjecting him to legal challenges or political pushback from conservative lawmakers. However, the governor has made it clear that he is willing to defend New Jersey’s stance on immigration, which emphasizes inclusion and protection for all residents, regardless of status.
His statement also raises questions about the future of sanctuary policies in the U.S. As more states and local governments face pressure from the Trump administration to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, New Jersey’s unwavering stance provides a critical example of how states can resist federal overreach while continuing to uphold the dignity and rights of immigrants.
A Call for National Reform
Governor Murphy’s actions and words are part of a larger national conversation about the future of immigration reform. His personal stand on the issue emphasizes the need for comprehensive reform that balances border security with the humanitarian needs of immigrants. He has called for a path to citizenship for undocumented individuals who have lived and worked in the U.S. for years, as well as reforms to the asylum process.
The broader implication of Murphy’s stance is a call to action for lawmakers and leaders across the country to reexamine U.S. immigration policy. Advocates argue that the current system, which leaves millions of undocumented individuals in limbo, is broken and in need of change. By speaking out, Governor Murphy is pushing for a national discussion on how to create a more just and humane immigration system.
A Personal Stand with Political Consequences
Governor Phil Murphy’s public support for the undocumented migrant living above his garage sends a powerful message that goes beyond personal boundaries. It challenges federal immigration policies that many view as punitive and divisive, while offering a glimpse into the lives of those who are directly impacted by these laws.
His stance will likely spark continued debate, both in New Jersey and across the nation, but it reinforces the idea that immigration is not just a political issue — it’s a human one. As New Jersey stands firm in its commitment to immigrant protection, Governor Murphy’s bold message to the federal government serves as a reminder that compassion and community should always be at the forefront of the immigration conversation.
