According to the Durham Police Department, a man has been charged in a crash last week that killed a man as the defendant was fleeing from police.
Shyrone Evans, 20, has been charged with felony second-degree murder in the death of Jermaine Clement, 53, of Durham, who was killed in the crash on March 19, according to police.
The crash occurred around 5:35 a.m. that day, as police were responding to car break-ins on Mount Mariah Road, according to officers.
An officer responding to the break-ins noticed the suspect vehicle, a stolen 2020 Kia Soul driving east on Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard.
When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect continued driving away, according to authorities.
Within a few seconds of the attempted traffic stop, the car entered the intersection of Southwest Durham Drive at a fast speed and failed to stop at the red light.
According to authorities, the Kia Soul collided with a black 2021 Toyota Highlander as it turned left from westbound Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard to travel south on SW Durham Drive.
Clement, a passenger in the Highlander, was transferred to a local hospital and ultimately died, according to authorities.

Clement’s brother in law Steven Williams stated that he was a former GoDurham driver, and his death affects the entire Bull City community. Clement faced long-standing health issues and overcome numerous obstacles during his life.
Three Kia Soul occupants and the Highlander driver were also hurt.
According to court documents, Evans is also charged with felony hit and run with major injuries/death, felony fleeing/elude arrest, and assault with a deadly weapon causing serious harm.
