A West Virginia couple is facing serious charges after police say their 3-year-old son was found cold, scared, and alone on the roof of their home — while his parents were passed out inside, unaware he was even missing.
Mason Adkins, 29, and Sonya Adkins, 25, were arrested and charged with child neglect after a horrifying discovery in Glenville on April 10. According to authorities, the toddler was found hunched over and shivering in the rain, “covered waist down with urine and feces,” while his parents slept through it all — reportedly after a long night of smoking marijuana and playing video games.
Local police were alerted after several concerned neighbors spotted the young boy on the roof around 11:45 a.m. Officers had to unlock multiple doors inside the home just to reach him — including one to his bedroom, which was reportedly locked from the outside. A window in the boy’s room was broken, and police believe that may have been how he ended up on the roof. Officers climbed through the same window to reach and rescue the child.
Shockingly, a 1-year-old sibling was also found inside the house. Officers said the younger child smelled strongly of feces and urine. The home itself was in disturbing condition, with feces reportedly smeared on the walls throughout.
When questioned, both parents claimed they hadn’t checked on their children since 8 p.m. the night before. They admitted to staying up all night playing video games and smoking pot. Police say the couple was completely unaware their child had even made it onto the roof.
Mason and Sonya Adkins are now being held in Central Regional Jail in Sutton, with bail set at $50,000 each. They face charges of child neglect creating risk of injury, as well as conspiracy.
