SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — The runway at Scottsdale Airport remains closed after a small aircraft veered off course and entered a retention basin at the end of the runway on Friday afternoon, prompting an immediate response from airport and public safety officials.
According to Scottsdale Airport authorities, two individuals were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, ensuring the safety of those involved and securing the area.
The aircraft came to a stop in the retention basin, a structure designed to manage stormwater runoff, which is located just beyond the runway. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation, and it is unclear whether weather conditions, mechanical failure, or pilot error played a role.
Public safety personnel, including fire and rescue teams, remain on-site to assess any environmental or structural impacts the crash may have caused. Airport officials have confirmed that the runway is currently blocked and will remain closed until further notice.
“There is no current estimate on when the runway will reopen,” a spokesperson for the airport said. “We are working closely with aviation authorities and safety teams to investigate the incident and ensure the runway is safe for future use.”
The closure has led to some delays and rerouting of general aviation traffic typically handled by Scottsdale Airport, a hub for private and charter flights in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Travelers and pilots are advised to check for updates and plan accordingly.
More information will be released as the investigation progresses.
