Police checking on a 70-year-old woman’s safety found her horrifyingly dismembered body in a locked closet at her West Haven, Connecticut, home. The body was stuffed into 14 to 16 trash bags.
Now, her son Theodore Lloyd, who is 27 years old, is being charged with attempted arson and trespassing after police found him trying to set fire to the house. There will be more charges brought against Lloyd for the death of his mother Tina Lloyd, and police say they think he did it alone.
A press release says that the investigation started on March 24 when Tina Lloyd’s older son asked West Haven police to check on her at her home on Nashawen Avenue. When the police arrived, they could smell a body breaking down. When they got inside, they saw 14 to 16 trash bags full of body parts that had been cut up. Police said there was also proof of an attempted fire.
According to West Haven police chief Joe Perno, it took some time to positively identify the victim because their body was so decomposing. Perno said this at a news conference on Friday.
DNA testing and comparisons proved that Tina Lloyd was who she said she was, Perno said. Police looked through “thousands” of pieces of proof. Police say that security video of Theodore Lloyd leaving Home Depot and Walmart with tools used in the dismemberment was a key part of their case.
Det. Jeff Gavinelli said, “There were a number of cutting tools, an electric chainsaw, and other similar items.” “Many of the items were hidden in plastic bags, either to be hidden or to be thrown away, but our ID unit was able to get them all.”
Police say there was also lighter fluid and paper in the house, which they think were meant to start a fire.
Police said the suspect lived with his mother until 2018, when he moved out because of a fight with his mother. Police say he didn’t have a place to live when his mum died.
Perno did not say why the person was killed. They caught Theodore Lloyd on April 14 and gave him to the police in West Haven. He is in jail right now with a $1 million bond.
People in the area said they hadn’t seen Tina Lloyd in three or two months.
Denny Steeves told, “We missed her, we hadn’t seen her.” “We had no idea where she was.”
Steeves said that even though she was older, she was still busy.
I would ask her, ‘Tina, do you want me to help you with your groceries?’ when she came home with a lot of groceries. She would walk up and down the street with her walker. she would say, “No, this is how I work out.” Very, very nice woman. Steeves told a local CBS station WSFB that the news was “tragic, tragic.”
