Earth Day 2025: Date, Theme, and How You Can Help Protect the Planet

Earth Day has been held every year on 22 April to raise awareness and protect the earth since 1970.

Sarah Davies, communications director for EarthDay.org, says that this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” is a call for people all over the world to work together to support green energy and clean electricity by 2030. Earth Day is now 55 years old.

“The progress the world has already made in solar energy is unbelievable,” he said.

How did Earth Day come to be?

The Library of Congress website says that 20 million people went to events all over the country in 1970 to mark the first Earth Day. These events took place at schools, colleges, and other public places.

In 1969, Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin, wanted to hold a series of “teach-ins” on college campuses to make people more aware of environmental problems. According to the World Economic Forum, Congressman Pete McCloskey (R-CA) and activist Denis Hawyer joined him. But they wanted to make a national movement that went beyond students and professors.

McCloskey worked to get the Clean Air Act passed in 1970. He was a Republican from California who supported the environment and opposed war. He helped write the Endangered Species Act and helped start Earth Day. The Environmental Protection Agency was made the same year that more tragedies in the country were linked to climate change and pollution, and people asked for cleaner water, air, and land.

When is Earth Day?

Every year on April 22, Earth Day takes place. It takes place on the Tuesday after Easter this year.

The day has been celebrated for more than 50 years, but it isn’t officially recognised by the central government.

Which states are the best at using clean energy?

“Texas and California, you know, the two most diametrically opposed states in America are the ones that are leading the charge in renewable energy,” he said. “And they’re doing it amazingly.”

Renewable energy will not only make our lives better, but it will also create new jobs. The World Economic Forum says that by 2030, it will have created over 10 million jobs around the world.

In the United States, Davies said, it was happening all over. “And in lots and lots of red states, these amazing projects are happening that are creating great jobs.”
