UD Student Killed, 8 Injured After U-Haul Fleeing Police Crashes Near Campus

Eight other people were hurt and a student from the University of Delaware died Tuesday in Newark, Delaware, when two people in an overdue U-Haul truck tried to escape police officers.

That day, around 4:30 p.m., on April 29, cops found a U-Haul truck that had been reported by the company because it hadn’t been returned by March 18.

Officials say that two people were inside the parked U-Haul on the 200 block of East Main Street when police officers came up to try to capture them.

Officials say the driver left the parking lot, drove over a curb, and hit a marked Newark police car. The suspects inside the truck didn’t listen to what the police said, but the officers apparently didn’t chase the truck when it ran away.

Police say that five minutes later, the truck hit two people who were standing next to a stopped car while going west on East Main Street at a very high speed. The truck then hit a few parked cars and then broke down.

Police were called to the scene and tried to save the life of one of the pedestrians, but the person died from their injuries, police said. The University of Delaware later found out that they were a student.

Officials say that the other person hit by the truck was seriously hurt and was taken to a nearby hospital by rescuers.

Police said they found the broken-down U-Haul truck and arrested both the driver and the passenger. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital because he or she was badly hurt.

Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company said that three other people were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Three more people were hurt, but their injuries were not serious, and they chose not to go to the hospital.

“We saw that the people screaming weren’t having fun; they were scared.” “All we could hear was a lot of noise and cars crashing,” said Victoria Dellano, a student at the University of Delaware.

This is being looked into by the Traffic Unit of the Newark Police Department. On Tuesday night, East Main Street near South Chapel Street was closed for hours.

At around 6 p.m., SkyForce10 flew over the scene and saw a black barricade blocking off part of the road and path.

It looks like a U-Haul van and a few other cars were involved in the accident.

One person who saw what happened said they heard a few loud bangs.

The University of Delaware said in a statement that there is no danger to the community or to the shared tools that students can use.

According to NBC10, students at the University of Delaware have been warned twice by the school about the event on Main Street, but they have not been given specifics about what happened.

As of early Wednesday morning, a monument had been built at the site of the murder.

At the beginning of the school year, in late August 2024, a student was killed on Main Street when a motorcycle driver sped away from police without stopping. In that case, the police said they did not chase the motorcycle.

This is the second crash in Newark, Delaware, in two days that has killed someone.
