Seven Dead in Fiery Crash Near Yellowstone National Park, Police Confirm

It happened on May 1 near Yellowstone National Park. Seven people died when a pickup truck and a tour van hit each other.

A Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Mercedes passenger van crashed near Henry’s Lake at 7:15 p.m. local time, police said in a news statement. Henry’s Lake is about 20 miles east of Yellowstone. The tour group was in the van when it crashed and caught fire. More than a dozen people were helped by first responders, including an air ambulance.

Fourteen people were in the van and one was in the truck. Six people in the van and the driver of the pickup died in the accident.

Police told the East Idaho News and the New York Times that all six of the people who died in the van were not from the United States. Aaron Snell, a spokesman for the Idaho State Police, said that he is still waiting for confirmation on details about the victims.

“Due to the magnitude of the incident and the ongoing process of notifying the next of kin, no names, ages, hometowns, or nationalities have been released,” the release says.

Authorities said that the highway where the accident happened was stopped for almost seven hours so that they could do their work. The road opened again on May 2. The reason for the accident is being looked into.
