Beauty Influencer Fatally Shot While Livestreaming on TikTok at Her Salon

During a video on TikTok from the salon where she worked, a Mexican beauty influencer was shot several times.

It was caught on camera on Tuesday that Valeria Márquez, 23, was shot and killed while she was live-streaming on TikTok, where she had 113,000 fans, according to The New York Times. The interview took place at a spa in Zapopan, Mexico, where Márquez worked. She was sitting in front of the camera and talking about how someone had dropped off a gift for her. She took the package out of its wrapping to see what was inside.

She called out in Spanish, “It’s a little piglet!” about the small animal she was holding in her lap.

Márquez looked away from the camera while she held the toy piglet in her lap. Reuters said they heard her say, “They’re coming,” and then they heard someone else say, “Hey, Vale?” She said “Yes,” and then she turned off the stream.

Soon after, Márquez grabbed her stomach as bullets hit her in the chest and head, killing her quickly. The livestream went on until another woman called and stopped it.

A spokesman for the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, Denis Rodríguez, told the New York Times that two guys on motorcycles came up to the salon. One of them walked into the studio wearing a mask and asked for Márquez. She told him who she was, and he shot her. He then left the shop on his motorcycle and ran away.

The Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office said the killing was being looked into as a femicide, which means that women and girls were being killed on purpose.

González said that Márquez probably didn’t know the person who was accused of killing her because he was “just her executioner.” He also said that the two men had come to the shop earlier that day and told other workers that they had a “gift” to give Márquez.

Reuters said Márquez had said earlier in her video that she had been told that someone had come by the salon while she wasn’t there and told her they had a “expensive gift” for her. Reuters said that Márquez looked worried when they talked about that part of the video.
