After threatening staff members with a gun, an Aloha man is suspected of robbing a Denny’s in the Happy Valley on Monday and taking a bag of cash from the establishment’s lotto machines.
Douglas Wayne Kelsey, 33, is accused of first-degree theft, second- and third-degree robbery, and menacing, according to a statement from the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors claim in court documents that Kelsey was playing video lottery machines at Denny’s, located at 12101 SE 82nd Avenue, when he noticed a worker taking money from the machines and grabbed the bag the worker was placing the money in.
According to court documents, Kelsey and the employee fought over the bag, and Kelsey was able to take it away from the employee and make her way out the door.
According to court documents, Kelsey allegedly shoved past a coworker who attempted to stop him, pulled out a semi-automatic weapon, and threatened to shoot the staff as he headed to a car.
According to police, a SWAT team detained Kelsey on a warrant after detectives located him at a residence in the unincorporated Clackamas County neighborhood located in the 7700 block of Southeast Lamphier Street on Thursday.
According to investigators, Kelsey was taken to a nearby hospital by medical responders for minor injuries he acquired during the arrest. Deputies booked him into jail a few hours later.
Kelsey had prior convictions for second-degree assault in 2013 and evading a police officer in 2023.
