(Associated Press) — HERSHEY, Pennsylvania As part of their investigation into the circumstances behind the arson attack on the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, the authorities are looking into whether the suspect was motivated by the Democrat’s Jewish faith or sentiments on Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
Cody Balmer, a resident of Harrisburg, is claimed to have harboured animosity towards Shapiro, according to the police. In a room where Shapiro and his family had just a few hours earlier celebrated Passover with members of the Jewish community, several search warrants that were published on Wednesday offer the first details about a possible reason for the arson attack that occurred early on Sunday morning.
In search warrants, the police reported that Balmer contacted 911 less than an hour after the fire broke out, made a promise of a confession, and discussed the killing of Palestinians.
From the incomplete quotations that are provided in the search warrants, it is not quite obvious what the individual was trying to say or who he was referring to. Shapiro “needs to know that he will not take part in his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people,” according to Balmer, who was cited by the police as stating, “our people have been put through too much by that monster.”
Balmer “admitted to harbouring hatred towards Governor Shapiro” during a police interrogation after turning himself in, according to a police document that did not elaborate on that particular point. This was before Balmer turned himself in. When the police acquired search warrants for Balmer’s electronic devices and a storage locker, they were looking for any writings or notes that had “the name of Josh Shapiro (or a) reference to Palestine, Gaza, Israel, or the current conflict in Gaza.”
At a press conference on Wednesday, Shapiro declined to discuss a possible motive, stating that the investigation into what led to the attack will eventually be conducted by the prosecution. He responded by saying, “It is not for me to answer that.”
In spite of the fact that the governor has been vocal in his criticism of the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the manner in which Israel is conducting its military operations in Gaza, he has also expressed support for the nation’s right to defend itself against Hamas.
According to his brother, Dan Balmer, who spoke to The Associated Press, Balmer, who is 38 years old, was given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder but did not believe the evaluation. He stated that he assisted Cody in receiving treatment at the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute on two separate occasions.
Balmer denied having any kind of mental condition while he was in court on Monday. He characterised himself as a welder who was currently without a job and had neither income nor savings. A judge decided not to grant him bail and instead ordered him to remain in custody on accusations that included attempted murder, terrorism, and arson. There was no plea entered by him.
Mary Klatt, the lead public defender for Dauphin County, issued a statement in which she announced that a preliminary hearing will be postponed “for the purpose of determining his competency to stand trial.” Additionally, she stated that Balmer will be defended by a group of attorneys “due to the complexity of this case.”
When Klatt was asked about the charges, he stated, “If they are true, they demonstrate the devastating consequences of severe mental illness.”
According to the court documents that were filed in this most recent instance of violence against political personalities in the United States, Balmer allegedly told the police that he intended to hit Shapiro with a small sledgehammer if he came across him after breaking into the building.
Pam Bondi, the Attorney General of the United States, had a conversation with Shapiro. She referred to the act of arson as “absolutely horrific” and stated that she is of the opinion that the person who is being accused of it “wanted to kill him.”
She went on to say that federal authorities are collaborating with state law enforcement and doing “anything we can to help convict the person who did this.”
An impartial and impartial third-party expert will evaluate the dangers and vulnerabilities of the official residence of the governor, according to an announcement made by the state police. In addition to stating that he has faith in his security team and the state police, Shapiro stated that more measures will be done to bolster safety systems.
Dan Balmer stated that his brother had exhibited behaviour that was cause for alarm, including the night before the fire, when he flipped over a table at the residence where Cody Balmer and his parents resided.
He is accused of climbing a security fence that was approximately seven feet high and two meters high, evading the police, smashing a window with a hammer and throwing a lit beer bottle that was filled with petrol into the piano room, according to a search warrant. After that, he shattered a second window, climbed inside the state dining room, and remained inside for approximately one minute, burning a second Molotov cocktail before kicking open a door and fleeing, according to the warrant.
According to Shapiro, he, his wife, his four children, and another family celebrated Passover on Saturday night. However, they were quickly awakened by state troopers knocking on their doors, and they were forced to abandon their home at approximately two in the morning. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze, and there were no injuries reported.
During the time that has passed since the incident, the governor and his wife have engaged in several conversations with their children.
As a parent, he said, “It is very difficult to answer to children, like why does this stuff happen,” and he was right the whole time. Why are there persons in the world that have the intention of causing harm to other people? “Those are challenging questions for children to respond to.”
