Authorities have identified the bicyclist murdered in Carbon County while riding tandem with another person when they were hit by an automobile.
The Carbon County Coroner’s Office identified the dead as Jancel Santos-Perez, 30, of Beaver Meadows, Carbon County. At 5:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Carbon County Deputy Coroner Dave Stianche pronounced Santos-Perez dead on the spot.
An autopsy was performed Thursday morning. The coroner’s office determined that the death was caused by blunt force injuries, and that the method was unintentional.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday on Spring Mountain Road, about 0.3 miles east of Route 93 in Banks Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police in Hazleton.
An 87-year-old lady from Weatherly, Carbon County, was driving west on Spring Mountain Road, nearing Route 93, when she collided with the bikers from behind, state police said.
Both riders were thrown off their bicycles. A 39-year-old woman was rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to state police.
According to state police, the driver pulled over and cooperated at the scene. She was not wounded in the collision.
Trooper Anthony Petroski III, public information officer for Troop N, informed lehighvalleylive.com that the investigation is ongoing and that the driver has not been charged in the collision.
The Carbon County Coroner’s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police in Hazleton, and the State Police Reconstruction Unit are all investigating the crash.
