Thursday, a big fire broke out in Long Beach. It sent a huge column of thick, dark smoke hundreds of feet into the air, which could be seen for miles around the city.
The fierce fire started in a lot near where the 710 and 405 freeways meet, and the Long Beach Fire Department sent workers right away to put it out. When firefighters got there, they saw what looked like stacks of black PVC plastic drain pipes on fire. The drain pipes fed the fire and made thick, deadly smoke.
Newschopper4 took pictures of the scene from above, showing fires eating up the plastic items as black smoke rose into the air. The fire was dangerously close to Los Cerritos Elementary School, which made people worry about the safety of the students and the quality of the air. It’s still not clear if the school was removed, but authorities were probably keeping a close eye on things.
The reason of the fire has not yet been found by the authorities. An investigation will likely happen once the fire is out for good. It was still Thursday afternoon, and people were still working to put out the fire and stop it from spreading.
People in the area were told to stay off the 710 and 405 roads because they might be hard to see on and to let emergency vehicles pass. People in the area were also told to stay inside and close their windows because of the thick smoke and possible plastic fumes.
There were no reports of injuries at the time of the event, but firefighters were still working hard to keep things under control. As more information comes in, more changes are likely to be made.
