DAYTON, Ohio – A collision between two drag-racing vehicles resulted in many hospitalizations and damage to two Dayton houses Tuesday morning.
The collision took place at Xenia Avenue and Boltin Street, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center. The crash occurred shortly after 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday.
When our 2 NEWS photographer arrived at the scene, he saw an SUV had slammed into a residence. Dayton Fire crews asked our photographer to go further away as a probable gas leak was ruled out.
At the scene, District Chief Tyler McCoy confirmed that the gas leak had been contained.
According to McCoy, Dayton Fire was alerted to the incident and immediately worked to deal with multiple issues that were occurring simultaneously.
At the scene, crews learned that a “SUV” had hit two residences. The automobile came to a stop in the center of the second residence. Following an initial inquiry, McCoy stated that a second car was also involved in the incident.
One of the automobiles also collided with a natural gas pipe, bringing free-flowing gas into one of the residences, potentially posing an explosive concern. Mutual aid was requested, resulting in assistance from the Kettering Fire Department.
The Dayton Police Department verified early Tuesday afternoon that the two automobiles involved in the collision were drag racing westbound on Xenia Avenue. Two vehicles were involved: a Hyundai Sonata and a Jeep Commander.

Each car hit speeds of 120 mph in a 30 mph zone. The investigation indicated that the Hyundai collided with the Jeep. The Hyundai collided with a utility pole, rendering it undriveable.
Meanwhile, the Jeep was taken off the road and crashed into a home’s corner before being launched flying, according to authorities. The Jeep came to rest inside the second home.
The driver of the Jeep was identified by authorities as a 23-year-old man. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is said to be in severe condition.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 17-year-old boy, and his passenger, a 15-year-old man, left the scene but were later apprehended. The driver was treated and subsequently discharged from a local hospital, but the passenger was arrested on the basis of an outstanding warrant.
According to police, the Hyundai was stolen, and the 17-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger fled the scene. The two people were later located, treated at a nearby hospital, and released. The passenger was arrested on the basis of an outstanding warrant.
Police suspect both drivers were inebriated, and neither is said to have a valid driver’s license. A 65-year-old woman was extricated from the second home and transported to a local hospital. According to police, her health is “critical.” Her arm was apparently impaled, pinning her against a wall.
A 61-year-old male inside the house was transported for safety reasons, but he was unharmed. The Jeep impacted one person inside the first home, but they were not hurt.
The Dayton Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit is investigating further. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the traffic services unit at 937-333-1149 and ask for Detective Jordan.
