Deadly Head-on Crash Between Two Semis in Dallam County Kills One, Injures Another

A head-on incident involving two semis Monday evening in Dallam County killed one person and badly injured another, authorities said Wednesday.

According to preliminary findings, a 2022 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was travelling north-east on US 54 around 10.6 miles south-west of Stratford, while a 2024 Volvo truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was travelling south-west on the other side of the road at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

According to DPS, the driver of the first semi drifted into the southwest-bound lane and collided with the second semi head-on, for unclear reasons.

The driver of the Freightliner truck, Mark Baucom, 63, of Eldon, Missouri, was pronounced deceased at the site due to injuries incurred in the incident.

The Volvo truck driver, a 36-year-old male from Parish, Alabama, was seriously injured and taken to Amarillo North-west Texas Hospital. According to DPS, both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The roads were dry and clear, with a posted speed restriction of 75 mph. The crash is still under investigation.
