NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – An accident on I-526 turned fatal Monday morning when a driver exited his vehicle and was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.

The North Charleston Police Department reported they were investigating a crash on the eastbound side of the interstate near the North Rhett Avenue exit. Around 7:45 a.m., officers responded to reports of a fatality in the eastbound lanes of the Don Holt Bridge.

Police spokeswoman Harve Jacobs said authorities discovered on the site that the driver of a damaged 18-wheeler either stepped off or fell off the step of the truck’s driver’s side door. This resulted in him getting hit by the vehicle that fled the area.

The man was pronounced dead at the spot.

Traffic was backed up for several miles, with all lanes stopped for several hours.

North Charleston Police traffic investigators are presently investigating this incident.

Drivers were encouraged to take other routes.

The Charleston County Coroner has not published the victim’s name.
