Editorial cartoons for July 27, 2025: Epstein scandal, Trump distractions, CBS controversy

Even as President Donald Trump traveled abroad to visit his golf estate in Scotland, he was plagued by questions about how the government handled confidential documents pertaining to sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein. Leading the editorial cartoon gallery is Walt Handelsman, who believes that Trump’s attempts to downplay the crisis are just making it more significant.

Supporters of the president want the Epstein papers, which are said to include the names of influential men who haven’t previously been linked to the financier who is accused of sex trafficking young women, to be made public by Trump’s Justice Department. Did Epstein commit suicide while incarcerated? Conspiracy theories surrounding the case are fueled by that question.

Some editorial cartoonists believe that Trump’s efforts to disassociate himself from Epstein are failing. Even though Trump has pleaded to turn the page, Bill Bramhall finds him entangled in the files. On Trump’s hand, where the president had applied cosmetics to cover up a bruise, Michael Ramirez depicts Epstein’s face. According to Phil Hands, Trump is the one who created the Epstein Files conspiracy, which he compares to the Frankenstein monster. Steve Breen saw the controversy as a stain on Trump’s trademark red tie.

Cartoonists also highlight Trump’s numerous attempts to shift the conversation, such as his calls for the Washington Commanders to go back to Redskins, a new Coke formula, and a sarcastic remark about previous President Barack Obama from the Justice Department.

This week’s gallery also discusses the illusive hunt for closure in the Etan Patz child abduction case, Hunter Biden’s media appearance, the contentious actions taken by CBS prior to the approval of the Paramount-Skydance merger, and famine in Gaza.

Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen, and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate, as well as Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett, and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency, drew the cartoons.
