Firefighters find 74-year-old dead following Southeast Portland residential fire

Portland firefighters

found a 74-year-old dead in Southeast Portland early Sunday morning after putting out a house fire.

Firefighters responded to the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood just after 4:30 a.m., Portland Fire & Rescue said on social media. The first engine on the scene found smoke coming from the single-story home, but by 4:45 a.m. had extinguished the blaze.

When firefighters searched the home for any victims, they found the senior dead, the agency said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Portland Fire said Sunday morning. The agency did not immediately release the name of the victim.
