Flashback: UK, Nazr Mohammed Use “Memorial Magic” to Defeat Vanderbilt at the Buzzer

John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats will take on the Vanderbilt Commodores tomorrow afternoon inside Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee. Memorial Gym has been known to provide plenty of “Memorial Magic”, mostly for Vanderbilt. However, on January 27, 1998, Tubby Smith’s Kentucky Wildcats stole some of that magic.

With Kentucky leading 61-58 with 13 seconds remaining on the clock, Vandy’s Drew Maddux came around a screen and buried a three to tie the game at 61. Following the basket, Tubby Smith signaled for a timeout and what followed wasn’t what he drew up, it was better.

The clock read 4.4 seconds when Scott Padgett took the ball out of bounds. The inbounds pass came into Jeff Sheppard, who was looking for Wayne Turner but the UK guard was tripped up on the play. Reacting quickly, Sheppard fired the ball cross-court to Nazr Mohammed, who took two dribbles before getting around his defender to flip a shot off the glass.

The ball left Mohammed’s hands with 0.1 seconds on the clock. Somehow, his shot, which hit high on the glass, fell through the basket. The officials signaled the shot good and Kentucky pulled off a miracle in the Music City.
