Florida Star Keyontae Johnson Diagnosed with Inflammation of the Heart

Florida basketball star Keyontae Johnson has been diagnosed with inflammation of the heart that may be related to an earlier infection of COVID-19, according to a report by the Gainesville Sun.

Johnson collapsed during the Gators game vs Florida State on December 12 and was placed into a medically induced coma during the first few days in the hospital.

The Florida star was one of several Gators that tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this year.

The heart condition, known as myocarditis, is most commonly linked to viral infections, but has been linked to COVID-19.

Johnson was released from the hospital Tuesday. A statement from the family read:

“We continue to be amazed at the pace of his recovery,” the family’s statement said. “Along with so many well wishes and prayers, we’ve understandably gotten questions about the cause and extent of Keyontae’s illness. As much as everyone involved wants firm answers, the process to draw definitive conclusions continues, and we ask for patience as the medical professionals continue their work.

“We are committed to sharing not only updates on Keyontae but also any information we think could help others. When we have that, we will share it. Until then, we continue to be grateful for the care and support Keyontae is receiving.”

Johnson will reportedly miss the remainder of the 2020-21 season.
