ATLANTA, Ga. — Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has announced her intentions to re-enter Georgia politics, with the possibility of running for governor in the upcoming election. This revelation comes after Bottoms addressed recent claims by former President Donald Trump regarding her departure from a senior advisory position under the Biden administration.
Addressing Trump’s Claim
In an interview with Channel 2’s Jorge Estevez, Bottoms expressed surprise and amusement at Trump’s claim that he had fired her.
“I said… oh, he thinks he fired me too,” Bottoms shared, adding, “So I was quite tickled to see one, the president of the United States is thinking of me the day after his historic inauguration at 1:30 a.m.”
Bottoms clarified that she had already submitted her resignation to President Biden on January 4th, effective January 20th.
A Return to Georgia Politics
Now that her time in Washington has ended, Bottoms is focusing on her next chapter.
“When I left the mayor’s office, I always said, ‘Never say never,’” she told Estevez.
When pressed about the possibility of running for office in Georgia, Bottoms confirmed her interest, saying, “There could be something.”
When Estevez specifically mentioned the governor’s race, Bottoms responded with a laugh, “Well, there will be a governor’s race on the ballot.”
The Upcoming Governor’s Race
The next gubernatorial race in Georgia will be pivotal, as Governor Brian Kemp is term-limited and cannot run for a third term. This leaves the field open for both Republican and Democratic challengers.
When asked if Georgia voters are ready for a female governor, particularly a woman of color with a political track record, Bottoms responded confidently:
“Absolutely. Absolutely.”
Bottoms’ Vision for Georgia
Bottoms expressed optimism about the future and outlined her priorities should she decide to run. Among the issues she highlighted were:
- Lowering inflation to ease the financial burden on Georgia families.
- Ending the war in Ukraine and addressing its global implications.
- Solving immigration issues, with a focus on creating humane and effective policies.
A Legacy in Atlanta
Keisha Lance Bottoms served as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022, where she navigated challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, social justice protests, and economic recovery efforts. Her leadership during these times earned her national recognition and a position as a senior advisor in the Biden administration.
The Road Ahead
As speculation grows about her potential candidacy, Bottoms remains tight-lipped about her official plans. However, her comments have already ignited discussions about what her entry into the race could mean for Georgia’s political landscape.
