This coming Sunday is Easter Sunday 2025! But there are some other faith holidays that happen around Easter that come before the main event. There is only one more day left until you can go back to a small comfort or guilty pleasure that you gave up for Lent.
Last Thursday was the end of Lent, so this week is Holy Week. Good Friday and Holy Saturday follow. Many people will have a three-day Easter weekend because some schools and workplaces are closed on Good Friday. But not everyone gets a holiday, and it’s not a government holiday.

What is the week of Easter? These are the seven days of Holy Week.
Holy Week is this week. It is the most important week in the Catholic faith. On April 13, Palm Sunday was the first day. This weekend, Easter Sunday is the last day.
During Holy Week, these days happen:
- Jesus entered Jerusalem with victory on Palm Sunday.
- On Monday, Jesus used a whip to clean out the temple.
- Ashes were put on Jesus with oil at Bethany on Tuesday, and he preached on the Mount of Olives.
- Wednesday was the day that Judas betrayed Jesus.
- Christ had the Last Supper, prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, and was taken on Holy Thursday.
- Jesus was put to death on Good Friday, nailed to a cross, and died there.
- Christ was laid to rest in the tomb on Holy Saturday.
- Christ rose from the dead on Easter Sunday.
This year, Easter Sunday comes so late.
Easter Sunday is not always in the same place each year. It can happen in late April. Because of this, all the faith holidays that happen before Easter also happen later in the year.
If you are Eastern Orthodox or not, the dates of Easter and the holidays that go with it are different. The Julian calendar was used by the Roman Empire and is used by the Eastern Orthodox Church. It is a solar calendar. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says that this year, both Eastern Orthodox Easter and Easter fall on the same day.
When does Easter happen every year? It changes every year because it is a “movable feast.” Based on the Gregorian calendar, it is always celebrated on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.
“However, in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Easter can be celebrated from April 4 to May 8… Long-term trends show that March 22 is the most unusual date for Easter. April 24 comes in second, and March 23 comes in third.
Every year, Easter falls on a different day.
The date of Easter changes every year because it is based on the moon, just like Lunar New Year. My trusty old farm book says that Easter Sunday always happens on the first Sunday after the full moon on the spring equinox.
In the Jewish calendar, Easter is based on the phases of the moon. Christmas, on the other hand, is based on the sun and falls close to the winter solstice.
“In the Christian faith, the Last Supper, which was the last meal Jesus ate with his disciples before he died on the cross, was a Passover feast.” The date of Easter can change because it depends on the lunar month, which lasts 29.5 days.
