For the third year in a row, the Class 2A/1A softball season ended with Grant Union/Prairie City battling against Weston-McEwen/Griswold.
And for the third year in a row, Grant Union/Prairie City is coming home with a state championship. The Prospectors were able to jump ahead early to pick up a 10-2 win over the TigerScots on Friday afternoon at Jane Sanders stadium.
Grant Union/Prairie City (20-8) got the scoring started early. In the top of the first inning, Reese Jacobs hit an RBI double to right center field to score Addy Northway.
Things started piling up for the Prospectors in the top of the second inning, as Savannah Watterson hit a double to score Fallan Giffin and Bristol Bailey. Later in the inning, Jacobs hit a single to center field to score Watterson and Brianna Sharp as the lead swelled to 5-0.
The TigerScots were finally able to respond in the bottom of the third inning, with Lily Langford hitting a solo home run.
But Grant Union/Prairie City added some insurance in the top of the seventh inning, as Gracee Hueckman hit a single to score Jacobs and Watterson. Then Grace Kenyon hit a triple to left center field to score Bailey, Hueckman and Skylar McKay as the lead ballooned to 10-1.
Weston-McEwen/Griswold cut the lead a little bit in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Kylie Kramer hit a single to score Megan McLouth.
Addy Northway picked up the win in the circle for Grant Union/Prairie City. In seven innings, she allowed four hits, one earned run and walked four while striking out seven.
Brielle Ward pitched all seven innings for Weston-McEwen/Griswold (23-6), allowing eight hits, five earned runs and walking six while striking out 10 batters.
Grant Union/Prairie City has played in each of the last four Class 2A/1A softball state title games, winning in 2023 and 2024.
