A Gresham police officer was charged with rape and sexual abuse of a minor girl and was arraigned on Friday morning.
At the Multnomah County Justice Center, 36-year-old Hector Carranza made his first appearance. He simply had a brief conversation with his court-appointed lawyer and made no public statements. On his part, the defense lawyer pled not guilty.
In the 56-count indictment, a grand jury accused Carranza of rape, sodomy, sexual abuse, luring a kid, and inciting child sexual abuse.
In addition, Carranza faces Measure 11 charges of employing a minor to show sexually explicit behavior, which has a required minimum prison term.
The district attorney’s office wants to hold Carranza in custody until a trial, according to Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Robin Skarstad. Carranza will return to court on Monday for a hearing on preventative detention, in which the judge will determine whether there is sufficient proof that an individual continues to endanger public safety.
At the moment, Carranza is being detained at the Clackamas County Jail.
In order to prevent Carranza from contacting the girl involved in the case, Skarstad also requested that Multnomah Circuit Judge Adele Ridenour issue a protective order.
According to the accusation, Carranza allegedly had intercourse with the girl from 2014 to 2017. The indictment claims that the alleged abuse started while the girl was younger than sixteen.
According to state documents, Carranza joined Gresham police in 2014. According to the department, a criminal complaint was filed against him in November. The department requested an investigation from Oregon State Police and put Carranza on paid administrative leave.
The accusations, according to the district attorney’s office, have nothing to do with on-duty interactions and are unrelated to any individuals Carranza spoke with during a criminal investigation. The office has refused to provide further details.
