Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents searched the home of a couple in Irvine, California. They were there as part of an investigation into posters that reportedly showed personal information about federal officers and were seen in Los Angeles months earlier.
They carried out the search order at Annie Yang and Yuzong Chang’s home with help from Secret Service agents around 6 a.m. on May 1. The couple said that the police bullhorn woke them up. The couple told NBC Los Angeles, “They said over the speaker, ‘People who live in this house, please come out with your hands up.'” Reports say that the agents took their router and a hard drive with family pictures on it.
The goal of the investigation is to find out who put out papers with personal information about ICE and police removal officers in different parts of Los Angeles earlier this year. Their 29-year-old son, Michael Chang, who moved to New York about a month before the search, is at the center of the investigation. According to reports, police were able to connect an IP address linked to a February doxxing case to the couple’s home.
Public records show that Michael has been politically active in the past. Ten people, including him, were charged by the Orange County District Attorney in September with failing to clear after a pro-Palestinian protest at UC Irvine in May, which police called an illegal gathering. According to his parents, those charges were later dropped after he did the required community work.
“No idea”
The couple was shocked when their house was broken into early in the morning. “It’s like I was on a movie set.” I couldn’t believe it, Yang told ABC 7 Los Angeles. She said that she and her husband had “no idea” if their son had anything to do with the signs.
ICE admitted that it had carried out a federal search warrant as part of a criminal investigation that was still going on, but they wouldn’t say anything else. For his part, Michael is said to be talking to a lawyer about the new accusations against him.
