ICE Operations Spark Controversy as “Big Raids” Hit Sanctuary Cities

Federal immigration enforcement efforts under President Donald Trump’s administration have once again sparked tension across sanctuary cities, following U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations on Thursday. While described by some as routine, the actions have left residents rattled and local leaders voicing concerns.

In a statement earlier this month, border czar Tom Homan had pledged to carry out “big raids” in sanctuary cities—a promise seemingly fulfilled as reports of ICE activity emerged from Newark, Boston, New York City, and other urban centers.

Hundreds Arrested in Nationwide Operations

According to ICE, Thursday’s operations led to the arrest of 538 individuals, including both undocumented immigrants and individuals with legal status, sparking outrage in some communities. In a video captured by WCVB, federal agents were seen detaining a man in Chelsea, Massachusetts, as part of the enforcement activities.

Local Leaders Push Back

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka accused ICE of conducting unlawful raids, claiming federal agents detained individuals without warrants. In a press release, Baraka highlighted the case of a veteran whose military documentation was allegedly questioned during the operation.
“This egregious act violates the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” Baraka said. “Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized.”

Baraka announced plans for a press conference with allies to defend civil and human rights in the wake of the raids.

Divided Opinions on Enforcement

In Massachusetts, ICE conducted arrests in Chelsea and East Boston. Gov. Maura Healey backed the actions, emphasizing that they targeted criminals, regardless of immigration status.
“I wouldn’t describe them as raids,” Healey told WCVB. “What it seems to be is the apprehension of criminals in our communities, which I support.”

In New York, WABC reported that ICE detained an alleged MS-13 gang member during the operations.

A Broader Policy Debate

The heightened enforcement reflects the Trump administration’s hardline stance on immigration in its second term, including expanded orders for ICE to conduct operations in sensitive locations like courthouses, schools, and churches.

While the administration frames these actions as vital to national security, critics argue they create fear and disrupt communities, especially in cities that have declared themselves sanctuary jurisdictions.
