Intel names new executives ahead of July layoffs

Intel hired three new vice presidents Wednesday and promoted another executive, reshaping the company’s leadership ahead of

mass layoffs

due to begin next month.

New CEO Lip-Bu Tan,

hired in March

, still has not publicly articulated a strategy for reviving the beleaguered chipmaker. But Wednesday’s moves will put his stamp on the company’s executive team.

Newly promoted Intel Chief Revenue Officer Greg Ernst has been with the company since 2005 and had led the company’s U.S. marketing since 2018.

Intel also hired three engineering vice presidents: Srinivasan Iyengar, Jean-Didier Allegrucci and Shailendra Desai. Iyengar had worked at Tan’s former company, Cadence Design Systems. Allegrucci and Desai will have roles in shaping Intel’s strategy for artificial intelligence, a big market where the company has no advanced products.

None of the executives work in Oregon, Intel’s largest site.

Two of Intel’s top Oregon researchers have retired this month. Ann Kelleher, formerly Intel’s head of technology development,

announced her retirement plans last year

and formally stepped down in early June.

Vice President Sanjay Natarajan announced his retirement last week from his post leading technology research in Intel’s manufacturing arm.

After reporting a $19 billion loss last year and

eliminating 15,000 jobs

, Intel is preparing another round of major layoffs. Over the weekend, the company notified factory workers and researchers that

it plans to trim their ranks by up to 20% beginning in July

.

Other parts of the company also plan to cut jobs but Intel hasn’t specified how many of those positions it will eliminate.
