Kansas City Area Grocery Store to be Replaced by Hispanic Supermarket Featuring Deli and Bakery

El Mercado Fresco, a locally owned Hispanic supermarket chain, will soon open a location in Gladstone.

The new grocer will take over Gladstone Supermarket at 6599 N. Oak Trafficway. It’s estimated to open in the spring.

Gladstone Supermarket will close when El Mercado Fresco takes possession of the building sometime in February, said the Hispanic chain’s owner, Eddie Musallet. Gladstone Supermarket has been open for about a year.

Before that, Save A Lot held a location there for several years. It closed in July 2023 after its owners with Value Grocers LLC closed it due to “general business decline.”

El Mercado Fresco has seven stores across the metro, serving Mexican and Hispanic dry goods, deli products, bakery items and more.

Its locations include ones at 2620 Independence Ave., 3500 Blue Ridge Cutoff and 6859 Longview Road.

Another location is on its way in Olathe at 808 Old Highway 56 in about five months, Musallet said. It will be the first in Johnson County. That location will have a Frutopia, a Mexican ice cream shop brand.

Musallet also opened an international grocery store World Fresh Market in a former Walmart Neighborhood Market at 10303 Metcalf Ave.

A significant change is coming to the Kansas City area, as a beloved local grocery store will soon be replaced by a new Hispanic supermarket featuring a deli and bakery. The new store, which is set to open in the next few months, promises to bring fresh, authentic flavors and an exciting shopping experience to the community.

This move comes as part of a broader trend across the country, where Hispanic supermarkets are increasingly becoming an integral part of the food scene. With a focus on providing high-quality, culturally relevant products, the new supermarket is expected to attract a loyal customer base and fill an important gap in the area’s grocery offerings.

The new supermarket is set to offer a variety of Hispanic food products, many of which are hard to find at traditional grocery stores. From authentic spices and sauces to fresh tortillas, the supermarket will provide a unique shopping experience for customers seeking high-quality ingredients for their favorite Hispanic dishes. Whether it’s preparing traditional Mexican meals, making homemade tamales, or trying something new, the store will have everything needed for both everyday cooking and special occasions.
