The Last Time Kentucky had a Three Game Losing Streak

The Kentucky Wildcats will look to end a recent two-game losing streak when they take on Mississippi State at Rupp Arena on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Fresh off losses to South Carolina and Florida, Kentucky needs a win vs. the Bulldogs, especially with a showdown vs. No. 7 West Virginia looming on Saturday.

Overall, Kentucky has dropped three of the last five games, resulting in being left out of the AP Poll for the first time since March 2014. Losing two straight is nothing new for John Calipari coached Kentucky teams, as this marks the third straight season and sixth in nine seasons under Calipari that the Wildcats have lost consecutive games.

While two-game losing streaks have occurred, Kentucky has never lost three straight under Calipari. You have to go all the way back to late in the 2009 season to find a losing streak that long. During Billy Gillispie’s final season at Kentucky, the Wildcats ended the regular season on a four-game losing streak, dropping consecutive games to South Carolina, LSU, Georgia, and Florida.

Ironically enough, that was also the last season that Mississippi State beat Kentucky. Calipari has had some close calls vs. the Bulldogs but they are one of two SEC teams (Missouri) that Cal has never lost to as coach at Kentucky.

Since Calipari took over in Lexington, Kentucky owns a 10 game winning streak vs. Mississippi State. Prior to that, the Bulldogs owned a 3 game winning streak vs. Kentucky. It’s a bit surprising, especially since there have been so many close calls in this series but Kentucky is 21-4 vs. Mississippi State since losing to them in the SEC tournament finals in 1996.

The Wildcats will look to extend the winning streak vs. the Bulldogs to 11 games and as a result, not allow this losing streak to extend to three games.
