Lincoln City school employee who raped student sentenced to year-and-a-half in prison

Last Monday, a former Lincoln County high school staffer was given a one-and-a-half-year jail sentence for sexually abusing a student in 2024.

Angela Schafer, 53, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Sheryl Bachart after she entered a guilty plea on Friday to third-degree rape and giving alcohol to the victimized juvenile, according to court documents.

According to the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, Schafer started serving as a health services advocate at Lincoln City’s Taft High School in 2022.

According to court documents, she was indicted by a grand jury in November 2024 after investigators discovered evidence that she had assaulted a minor on February 15, 2024.

Schafer had no past criminal convictions, and according to district attorney’s office, Oregon sentencing standards recommended for a probationary term rather than prison time, even though a conviction for third-degree rape carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

However, because of the victim’s vulnerability and Schafer’s position of authority or trust, prosecutors pushed for a jail sentence, and Schafer ultimately agreed to a plea deal that included an 18-month prison sentence.

At the sentencing, Judge Bachart stated, “You never know who is capable of doing this; it could be anybody.” Some adults are placed in situations where they have more access to children, and you took advantage of this. The child was vulnerable to sexual assault, and your position gave you access to him.

According to district attorney’s authorities, Schafer will also have to pay a $8,500 fine and register as a sex offender.
