A look back to the last four Wildcat victories vs. the Gamecocks

Denzil Ware returned a fumble for two points a Kentucky two-point win vs. the Gamecocks in 2015 – Ware and the Wildcats head to Columbia looking to extend the winning streak to four games.

The Kentucky Wildcats and South Carolina Gamecocks have gone to battle on the football field 27 times, dating back to their first meeting in 1937, a 27-7 victory for the Wildcats. The Wildcats overall record in the series is (10-17-1), but the last four victories have been memorable.

The series between the two SEC East foes was evenly played until the Gamecocks won 10 straight and 13-of-14 beginning in 2,000. The Wildcats ended the 10 game losing streak and defeated Steve Spurrier for the first time on a night to remember at Commonwealth Stadium, capped off by this Randall Cobb touchdown on 4th and 7.

After ending the decade long streak, the Wildcats struggled mightily the final two seasons of the Joker Phillips era and Mark Stoop’s roster wasn’t adequately equipped to pull out a victory in 2013. That all changed in 2014 when Jojo Kemp ran wild on the Gamecocks and Bud Dupree sent Commonwealth into a frenzy.

The following season, the Wildcats traveled to Columbia looking to end a 22-game road-losing streak. Kentucky jumped out to a 24-7 halftime advantage before the Gamecocks stormed back within two points. Leading 24-22 in the fourth quarter, Denzil Ware scooped up a fumble on a two-point conversion and returned it for a score. A late interception by Chris Westry sealed Kentucky’s 26-22 victory, essentially ending an embarrassing road losing streak.

Owning a two game winning streak in the series, the Wildcats entered the 2016 matchup in an uncomfortable position. Rumors were running wild that Mark Stoops would be looking for a job following the game, but the Wildcats came to the defense of their coach, turning their season around with a 17-10 victory.

As you can see, the last three matchups have been decided late in the fourth quarter. Expect much of the same on Saturday and hope the Wildcats find a way to push the winning streak to four games.
